Allergy Reviews

Two beautifully illustrated NEJM-reviews on allergy and allergic diseases,  Kay, 2001 (1)(pdf)  and  Kay, 2001 (2)(pdf).  Similarly, on asthma,  Busse & Lemanske, 2001.

Allergy – Genetics

It has been suspected for years that a genetic component is present in allergy. Finding the exact genes has taken some time, but genes behind diesel fuel intolerance has now been disclosed, news.allergy.genes04.txt.

Allergy and FM/CFS

A French study found high numbers of delayed-type hypersensitivity markers in CFS,  Brunet et al., 2001, and a German study found allergy markers in FM cells,  Barth et al., 2001.  A Polish study on allergen specific IgE did not find evidence for more allergy in CFS than in controls,  Kowal et al., 2002.

IgE in CFS

A 2001-study found no difference in IgE between CFS patients and controls,  Repka-Ramirez et al., 2001.

Coeliac Disease

A number of clinical findings suggest that CFS/FM and coeliac disease (ie. Gluten intolerance) may be associalted. For a recent debate in Br. Med J., “There is now a very strong case for using simple screening tests (eg. anti-endomysial antibodies ) to largely rule out coeliac disease in people with ME/CFS like symptoms”, coeliac.disease.bmj05.txt.

Rhinitis in FM/CFS – nonallergic ?

The association of CFS with rhinitis was studied,  Baraniuk et al., 1998,  Baraniuk et al., 1998.

Many patients suffer from irritant rhinitis, caused by nervous system reactivity,  Baraniuk et al., 2000.  A 2002-study from the same researchers provided further documentation for this condition,  Naranch et al., 2002.  More evidene for the CFS associated rhinitis being of a nonallergic nature with no effect from corticosteroids was provided, kakumanu.etal03.txt.

Nickel Allergy in CFS

Nickel allergy is common in CFS,  Marcusson et al., 1999,  and may be connected with cigarette smoking,  Regland et al., 2001.  A Czech study warned against dental material including both mercury and nickel,  Sterzl et al., 1999.

Interestingly, some lymphocytes can be sensitized by metals like mercury and gold, which may explain previously unexplainable findings,  Stejskal et al., 1999.
