Alzheimer-like deficits in CFS/ FM

Cognitive deficits in CFS have been reported in many studies.  At a conference the cognitive problems in CFS was compared to mild to moderate degree of Alzheimer's Disease,  Scholey et al., 1999.

Head/ Brain Injury

Head injury, surprisingly is more serious to women:  Kraus et al., 2000.  Head injury can cause Alzheimer's disease in animals,  news, brain injury, 1999.  A comparative study on attention deficit in CHI (closed head injury), was performed in Italy Cossa & Fabiani, 1999.

Visual Problems in CFS/FM

Also visual problems arise with CFS,  Mastropascua et al., 2000.

Neuropeptides

One very important area of research is that of neuropeptides.  News Dec. 1999 refer to the discovery of the molecule BDNF which "bridges" between stress and brain chemistry (serotonin),  news, BDNF, 1999.  An Indian study of ME patients defined by "Wessely-criteria" found disturbed brain chemicals in blood and a majority of right hemisphere domination in patients,  Kurup & Kurup, 2003   Kurup & Kurup, 2003 (pdf).
