Reviews on Immunology in CFS and FM

Recent review: lorusso.etal08.txt, lorusso.etal.08.txt, lorusso.etal08.pdf. Earlier by the New Jersey group,  Natelson et al., 2002,  natelson.etal02.pdf.

Status of immune mediators in FM, gur.oktayoglu08.txt.

Correlation with CFS/ FM Illness

Correlation between immunologic measures and severity of CFS illness,  Cruess et al., 2000.  These researchers related Paul-Bunnell antibodies in disease states with immune functioning,  Patarca-Montero & Fletcher, 2002.  Only few immunology parameters of importance for understanding the immune dysfunction in CFS,  Hanson et al., 2001.

Bronchial hyper reactivity unrelated to the immune cell derangements in CFS patients,  Nijs et al., 2003,  Nijs et al., 2003 (pdf). Cellular and humoral immune abnormalities in Gulf war veterans 2– 8 years after the war, vojdani.thrasher04.txt, vojdani.thrasher.04.txt, vojdani.thrasher04.pdf. Are anti-polymer antibodies correlated with pain and fatigue severity in

patients with FM?, sarzi-puttini.etal07.txt.

Immune Cells tested

FM women did not have lower NK cell activity than controls, landis.etal04.txt.  NK cell functions could be affected differently in different CFS clusters,  Stewart et al., 2003,   Stewart et al., 2003 (pdf).  Diminished intracellular perforin was suggested to be the cause of NK cell malfunction, maher.etal05.txt, maher.etal05.pdf.

Review on cytolytic cells in CFS,  Patarca-Montero, 2002.

Increased neutrophil apoptosis (cell death) was found in CFS, kennedy.etal04.txt, kennedy.etal.04.txt, kennedy.etal04.pdf. FM patients had significantly higher norepinephrine and anandamide plasma levels. Neutrophils of FM patients showed an elevated spontaneous H(2)O(2) production. The ability of neutrophils to adhere was negatively correlated with serum cortisol levels. Adhesion and phagocytosis capabilities of neutrophils correlated positively with anandamide plasma levels, kaufmann.etal08.txt.

Lymphocyte subset differences in patients with CFS, multiple sclerosis and major depression, robertson.etal05.txt.

CFS monocytes have decreased beta-endorphin amount, Panerai et al., 2002,  A test for eosinophil cell activation (cationic protein X) demonstrated increased concentration in CFS patients,  Schacterle et al., 2001.

Adhesion molecules and cytokine expression in FM: Increased L-selectin on monocytes and neutrophils, macedo.etal07.txt.

Decreased expression of CD69 in CFS in relation to inflammatory markers: evidence for a severe disorder in the early activation of T lymphocytes and natural killer cells, mihaylova.etal07.txt.

Immune Factors in Spinal Fluid

Analyzed spinal fluid in CFS, natelson.etal05.txt, natelson.etal05.pdf.

Immune Modulation/ Altered Immune Function

Immunomodulation may benefit CFS patients,  Klimas et al., 2001 (abstract),   Klimas et al., 2001 (pdf).

Early results from immunotherapy,  Patarca-Montero et al., 2001 (abstract),   Patarca-Montero et al., 2001 (pdf).

The current model of CFS used in Miami  includes an interaction between immunologic and psychological factors as well as the activation of latent herpes virus,  Patarca-Montero et al., 2001.

In Sweden trials with Staphylococcus toxoid for FM/CFS has been successfully accomplished, but maintenance therapy is needed,  Zachrisson et al., 2002.  Further evidence for effect includes antibody response with some patients but not with others, zachrisson.etal04.txt, zachrisson.etal04.pdf. One-year follow-up on this project, gottfries.etal06.txt.

Prolonged illness after infectious mononucleosis is associated with altered immunity but not with increased viral load, cameron.etal06.txt, cameron.etal06.pdf.

Vaccination may play a role in CFS, appel.etal07.txt, appel.etal07.pdf.

Immunology and Sleep / Pregnancy

Immunology in relation to psychology and sleep,  Van Hoof et al., 2002, and  Van Hoof et al., 2002.

The occurrence of pregnancy does not improve CFS nor does it worsen symptoms, schacterle.komaroff04.txt, schacterle.komaroff04.pdf.

Immunology and Exercise

Complement-activation after exercise in CFS patients, sorensen.etal03.txt, sorensen.etal03.pdf.  Intracellular immune deregulations as the cause of exercise intolerance in CFS, nijs.etal04.txt, and a commercial study ‘implicate abnormal immune activity in the pathology of exercise intolerance in CFS and are consistent with a channelopathy involving oxidative stress and nitric oxide-related toxicity’, snell.etal05.txt.

Antibodies in CFS/ FM

Anti-nuclear envelope antibodies present in autoimmune diseases and in CFS,  Nesher et al., 2001.  Auto-antibodies in CFS,  Nishikai et al., 2001 (short),   Nishikai et al., 2001 (full paper).  Slightly higher levels of anti-polymere-antibodies were found in FM, jensen.etal04.txt. In FM the finding of ANA (anti-nuclear antibodies) is of no significance,  Al-Allaf et al., 2002.  CFS had higher rates of antibodies to microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2), vernon.reeves05.txt, vernon.reeves.05.txt.

Low antibody markers of elastin synthesis in patients with FM, keith.etal06.txt.

Antibodies to Herpes Simplex 1 and 2, bond.dinan06.txt.

IgM antibody against HCMV in a subpopulation of CFS patients,  Lerner et al., 2002.  Also with Epstein-Barr virus, Lerner’s research found IgM antibodies in a subset of CFS, lerner.etal04.txt, lerner.etal04.pdf.

Autoantibodies against thyroid tissue in FM, ribeiro.proietti04.txt, pamuk.cakir06.txt and bazzichi.etal.07.txt.

Increased serum IgA and IgM against LPS of enterobacteria in CFS, maes.etal06.txt, maes.etal06.pdf. IgM-related immune response directed against neopitopes formed by oxidative or nitrosative damage to lipids and proteins, maes.etal.06.txt. Increased serum IgM antibodies directed against phosphatidyl inositol (Pi) in CFS and major depression: evidence that an IgM-mediated immune response against Pi is one factor underpinning the comorbidity, maes.etal.07.txt.
